September 2011 - Nose Cone

The last 4 feet of bottom at the bow is what Martha and I call the "nose cone".
Four feet from the bow, the bottom "V" has a 30 degree angle.
At the bow (the stem), it is vertical, i.e. flush with the stem.
Thus the plane of the bottom rotates 60 degrees in 4 feet. This can't be done with
plywood, even with 1/4", much less the 3/4" we are using for the bottom.
We have tried different materials and methods and may have hit on the one we will use.
We'll know in May or June of 2012.

Making a twisted surface with epoxyed
fiberglass cloth layed over stretched strings.
Plywood would not make the bend.

We abandoned this approach because it
would have required too much (dear) epoxy
to build it up to 3/4". Also, providing an
adequate gluing base would be difficult.

We tried cutting grooves half way through 3/4"
ply. No luck. It doesn't take the right shape.

We will probably use this approach for half the nose cone.
The sticks will be screwed and glued at the ends and
to one another, then ground smooth and trimmed.

This is the likely solution to the last 18",
but the contour is wrong.
Will work on it over the winter.
